It is important to know the different types and sources of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/what-are-national-merit-scholarships\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">merit scholarships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just to be clear, a merit scholarship is <\/span><b>\u201cfree\u201d money<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offered based on <\/span><b>something other than financial need<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These scholarships are based on some type of \u201cmerit\u201d a student has. \u201c<\/span><b>Merit\u201d really refers to a student\u2019s qualities or statistics and can be a combination of several things.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I will talk about this more under the types of merit scholarships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, let\u2019s start with the sources. There are <\/span><b>3 main sources for merit scholarships<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 colleges, state programs and private sources. Let\u2019s walk through each one.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sources for Merit Scholarships<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Colleges<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 The majority of merit scholarships come directly from colleges.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/how-to-find-full-ride-scholarships\/\"> <b>Colleges offer these scholarships to attract students, especially top students<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Colleges offer merit scholarships in amounts ranging from <\/span><b>hundreds of dollars up to the<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/can-my-kid-get-a-full-ride-scholarship\/\"> <b>full cost of college<\/b><\/a><b> plus extras<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Most colleges disclose these merit scholarship opportunities on their websites, although sometimes the amounts are not disclosed. Colleges offer several different types of merit scholarships. Refer to the \u201ctypes\u201d section below for more details. <\/span><b>There are some colleges that do not offer any merit scholarships<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I keep a listing of these and it currently contains 37 colleges. This would include all Ivy League colleges, plus other schools primarily among the top rated and most selective colleges in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>States<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Many states have a variety of merit scholarship programs. These often use state lottery proceeds to fund college scholarships. Some of the largest and most known are:<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org\/SSFAD\/bf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big Futures (FL)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> granting up to full tuition, HOPE and Zel Miller Scholarships (GA), the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hed.nm.gov\/financial-aid\/scholarships\/new-mexico-opportunity-scholarship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">full tuition New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Massachusetts<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mass.edu\/osfa\/programs\/tsongas.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul Tsongas Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program offering full tuition scholarships, and the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohe.state.mn.us\/mPg.cfm?pageID=150\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minnesota Academic Excellence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Private Sources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 These are primarily through foundations, corporations, clubs &amp; other organizations.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/5-things-parents-need-to-know-about-private-scholarships\/\"> <b>Private merit scholarships<\/b><\/a> vary in amount from hundreds of dollars to a full ride plus extras.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Additionally, private merit-based scholarships may be offered to students in a local area, in a specific state, or may be offered nationally or internationally. Some of the biggest private merit scholarships include the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stampsscholars.org\/our-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stamps Scholars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offered through partner colleges (currently 37 colleges),<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coca-colascholarsfoundation.org\/about\/faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coca-Cola Scholars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, awarded to 150 students per year, and the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/equitable.com\/foundation\/equitable-excellence-scholarship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equitable Excellence Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>There are also well known large private scholarship programs that look at both financial need and merit in awarding scholarships<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/mycap.collegeaidpro.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MyCAP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> includes a database of over $5.1 billion dollars in private scholarships so you can find the ones that are applicable to your student. Very large and well-known scholarship programs have tons of competition, making the odds of winning very low for a particular student. <\/span><b>A student\u2019s best bets for winning private scholarships are going to be small local scholarship programs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Usually the high school counseling office will have a list of these. Scholarships tend to be offered through local businesses, Rotary clubs, Lions clubs, Knights of Columbus, Optimists, Elks, VFW, Women\u2019s clubs, PEO and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the different sources for merit scholarships, there are <\/span><b>different types of scholarships<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One could argue that there are really only two types \u2013 automatic and competitive, but we break these down further in our<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mycap.collegeaidpro.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MyCAP scholarship database<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Types of Merit Scholarships<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Automatic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 These are merit scholarships <\/span><b>guaranteed to be awarded to students who meet the stated criteria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Usually, this relates to a certain GPA or combination of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/what-act-or-sat-score-will-get-you-a-full-ride-scholarship-to-the-school-of-your-dreams\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GPA and ACT or SAT score<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Class rank may also come into play and sometimes Valedictorians and Salutatorians are automatically awarded a large scholarship. Here\u2019s a good post to learn more about automatic merit scholarships:<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/top-two-resources-for-finding-automatic-merit-scholarships\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Is An Automatic Merit Scholarship?<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Semi-Automatic <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; These are very similar to Automatic scholarships. The big difference is that the school does not guarantee the student will receive the scholarship if they meet the stated criteria. Anytime a scholarship indicates the student \u201cmay\u201d be awarded or is \u201cconsidered\u201d based on a specific GPA and ACT\/SAT combination, we consider this a semi-automatic merit scholarship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/what-are-competitive-merit-scholarships\/\"><b>Competitive<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 These are merit scholarships that <\/span><b>a student is considered for, either based directly on his or her college admission application or a separate scholarship application<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This category varies widely in whether or not extra work is involved. The most competitive scholarships often involve scholarship days or weekends on campus with interviews and other activities as part of the competition. The reward for all this extra work is often very large as many of these are full tuition and full-ride scholarships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/a-national-merit-scholarship-success-story\/\"><b>National Merit\/National Recognition Scholarships<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 These are scholarships awarded based on achieving the designations related to the <\/span><b>National Merit Scholarship Qualification Test (the PSAT)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The National Recognition Programs award academic honors to underrepresented students. These include the National African American Recognition Program, National Hispanic Recognition Program, National Indigenous Recognition Program and National Rural and Small Town Recognition Program. Many colleges award scholarships to students who receive these distinctions. We list out all of these scholarships in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mycap.collegeaidpro.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MyCAP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As for the core National Merit program, you can read more about the different sub-types of National Merit scholarships here. For now, the best thing to know is that these scholarships require the student to score well on the PSAT test that is taken his or her Junior year of high school. <\/span><b>The best National Merit scholarships will require a student to score among the top 7,500 students who take the test nationwide. Additionally, only about 1\/2 of these 7,500 students receive a National Merit related scholarship. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your student falls into this category, you can search for all the available National Merit scholarships offered by colleges in MyCAP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/what-are-talent-merit-scholarships\/\"><b>Talent<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 These are scholarships based primarily on<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/what-are-talent-merit-scholarships\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a specific talent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the student has rather than his or her basic academic qualifications. <\/span><b>The most popular areas for talent scholarships are music, art, dance and theater.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some of the other areas that award talent scholarships include<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/athletic-scholarships-101\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cheer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, film, journalism, creative writing, forensics, debate and speech. Talent scholarships awarded by colleges <\/span><b>vary in amounts from a couple hundred dollars to a few that are full tuition or full rides<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The majority of talent scholarships require the student to be majoring in the area of his or her talent. However, there are some talent scholarships awarded to students who have an interest in continuing their talent in college, but not majoring in it. <\/span><b>Most talent scholarships require either an audition or submission of a portfolio.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Automatic and semi-automatic merit scholarships tend to be offered by colleges or states. Private scholarships involve some type of competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last two types, National Merit\/National Recognition and talent scholarships could be automatic or competitively awarded.
