{"id":306,"date":"2022-09-08T13:12:19","date_gmt":"2022-09-08T13:12:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/?p=306"},"modified":"2022-10-27T13:56:46","modified_gmt":"2022-10-27T18:56:46","slug":"can-my-kid-get-a-full-ride-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/can-my-kid-get-a-full-ride-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"Can My Kid Get a Full-Ride Scholarship?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was listening to a financial call-in program the other day and the topic of how a mom was going to pay for her kid\u2019s college came up.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI\u2019m hoping she will get a scholarship.\u201d That was it. She had no money saved, the daughter was in high school and she was counting on a scholarship. I inferred that she meant a \u201cfull-ride scholarship\u201d since it didn\u2019t sound like she had any room in her budget to be paying for college through cash flow. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first, I laughed as I thought about how unrealistic this was, but I know how easy it might be to get sucked into believing that.\u00a0 The conversation didn\u2019t go into any specifics about her children, like test scores or grades.\u00a0 Maybe the girl was a genius, I don\u2019t know, but I remembered my own delusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While I never thought my oldest daughter was going to get a full ride for four years of college, I did think she was special because she had a great GPA and a <a href=\"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/what-act-or-sat-score-will-get-you-a-full-ride-scholarship-to-the-school-of-your-dreams\/\">30+ ACT<\/a> as well as lots of volunteer hours and extra-curricular activities. Early on in my college search, I was sure this would get her lots of merit scholarship offers. After I started reading articles and posts online, I found out lots of other students had statistics that were at least as impressive as hers, and there were also the National Merit Finalists. I started thinking, wow, there is going to be a lot of competition for these scholarships! This proved to be true.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At one school, my daughter was invited to compete, along with almost 400 other high-flying students, for 20 scholarships ranging from three-quarters of the tuition cost to full tuition plus room and board. She was not one of the twenty winners and, in this case, she was relieved because she really didn\u2019t want to go to that school anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A true \u201cfull-ride\u201d scholarship consists of tuition plus room and board. Some even go farther and throw in books, transportation costs, spending money, an internship, and more. More prevalent would be the \u201cfull tuition\u201d scholarships.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What Type of <a href=\"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/how-to-find-full-ride-scholarships\/\">Full Ride Scholarships Exist?<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how many true four-year full-ride scholarships are out there? In my research, I found 4 types of full-ride scholarships:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Automatic or semi-automatic full ride provided by the college <a href=\"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/make-college-funding-a-breeze-find-these-5-types-of-merit-scholarships\/\">based on ACT\/SAT score and GPA<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we have 14 schools in our database that offer this.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Automatic full ride provided by the college for being a <a href=\"https:\/\/collegeaidpro.com\/a-national-merit-scholarship-success-story\/\">national merit finalist or semi-finalist<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we have 33 schools in our database that offer this.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Competitive full ride provided by the college<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (either students come to the school for a special competition or the admissions office selects students to receive these based on their application materials)\u00a0 \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we have 214 schools in our database that offer this. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some require national merit finalist or semi-finalist status to compete, some require certain GPA and ACT\/SAT scores, some require a separate application with an essay, and others pre-qualify students with grades and test scores, but require them to interview and\/or write an essay for the final selection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Private full ride provided through a corporate or foundational scholarship program<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 There are at least four well-known in this category:\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stampsscholars.org\/our-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stamps Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gmsp.org\/a-gates-millennium-scholars-program\/#1521250133137-cfebc049-dece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gates Millenium Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgaesf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chick Evans Caddie Scholarships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.questbridge.org\/high-school-students\/national-college-match\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">QuestBridge National College Match<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the schools that used ACT\/SAT scores as a determining factor for a scholarship or a competition, 32 was the most common low-end score accepted.\u00a0 Some lesser-known state schools will accept below this.\u00a0 Several Alabama state schools offer full tuition down to a 28 ACT.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Navigating The Scholarship Landscape<\/h2>\n<p>The really great automatic scholarships are not coming from colleges near the top of any \u201cbest colleges\u201d ranking lists. They are coming from schools that desperately want to attract top students to their campuses.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that exploring smaller schools that are lesser-known doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean sacrificing the quality of education!
